Quartzite Countertop Durability

Quartzite, at 7 Mohs, is actually a bit harder than granite which runs 6-6.5 Mohs. Quartzite is also much more UV resistant than granite which makes it superior for patio areas and sunrooms. However, granite is more resistant to scuffs and scratches than quartzite. This makes it imperative to seal quartzite surfaces more often than is necessary for granite. And, you should always use a cutting board when preparing meals on quartzite countertops.

Quartzite is showier than granite because it sparkles in both sunlight and artificial light due to tiny bits of quartz crystals naturally embedded in the stone’s matrix. This stunning effect can really set your home apart and, for that reason, quartzite is prized by many builders, decorators and designers. In fact, this stone will often have uniquely beautiful veins of quartz crystals in showy splashes of pinks, greens, blues, greys, reds, etc.

Where Should You Use Quartzite Surfaces?

Quartzite is well suited for many surface applications. As stated above, it is ideally suited for outdoor use which could be a patio, portico, or even a poolside area (honed and unpolished slabs to prevent slipping). As far as indoor applications go, the only limiting factors are your imagination and budget. Because quartzite is rarer than marble―and because it is favored by designers―the cost is a bit more.

While quartzite makes a beautiful countertop, you should refrain from cutting anything directly on it because quartzite is prone to scratching. Always clean juice, wine and vinegar spill immediately as these acids may cause etching. To clean, simply wipe with a warm, damp cloth. Do not use harsh detergents or bleach to clean spills.
