What Are Slab Backsplashes?
This standard backsplash might be a tile border that extends a mere four inches up the wall from the counter surface. However, it could be up to about 20 inches tall, depending on the designer’s and homeowner’s preferences.
The alternative is a full-height backsplash that covers the entire area between the counter and the upper cabinets. It could even extend to the ceiling in some areas, such as behind the stove or sink. This backsplash is meant to cover all the wall space rather than just a small portion. A slab backsplash typically comes from an unbroken slab of stone (although there may be seams, depending on how much surface it is covering).
Often, the slab backsplash uses the same stone as the kitchen countertop surface. This amplifies visual interest and enhances the statement made by the stone, whether you like the luminous glow and bold veining of marble.
Without the intrusion of grout lines between tiles, you’ll enjoy a continuous surface and a powerful visual effect. This effect is especially striking if you choose bookmatch slabs that allow the pattern to flow seamlessly from the counter to the backsplash.
Considerations for Slab Backsplashes
Because of the visual impact of matching your backsplash to your countertop, you’ll have to carefully consider the type and variety of stone you choose. The bolder the pattern, the more it will dominate your space, so be realistic about your tolerance for color, pattern, and variation.
You’ll also have to decide whether you want bookmatch slabs. Bookmatch is only really necessary if you have a bold pattern. For example, you would likely want to bookmatch Calacatta marble.
